I have been doing a lot of consulting lately. Free consulting that is. The topic? What’s your website communicating? So many people approach their website design as a brochure and just get it up and then forget about it. So it’s something that is really only targeted to first time visitors. And guess what? That is a problem.

This new infographic came through on my Twitter feed. It is a clear demonstration that Social Media is here to stay. This graphic does tell us what percentage of folks aren't using Social Media. It just asks how people are strategically implementing it in their overall marketing plans.

Creativity – Don’t limit yourself

I hear a lot of people say I am not creative or I am not creative like you. The truth is, everyone is creative but most people associate it with design or in its purest art form - and that’s where they miss the point. Quite frankly this drives me crazy. By limiting the definition of creativity you essentially limit what creativity is all about and therefore don’t give yourself credit for what you are creative at. For instance, I might create a great ad for Crown Diamond but I wouldn’t try to design a great piece of jewelry. It’s not in my wheelhouse or is it? I can be creative in how I want my ring to look but then take it to a professional to make it the best that it can be. I believe in paying professionals to do what they do best but in these tough times let’s face it, one has to be, well…creative. Whether it’s being creative in how you attract customers or keep employees or figure out how to reduce your bills, creative thinking is the key.

It’s July. Business is relatively slower. It’s hot. Actually, it’s very hot! So why not recharge your brain and explore some topics that can help the store? Well that’s what I and some colleagues decided to do. Every Friday in July, we are hosting a Social Media Scramble. I know you are probably thinking, I am not attending another thing on social media - but before you bail on this article, stick around.

Another Nugget from Facebook

This may not be new for everyone but it was new for me! So I figured it would also be new for some of you too. One of the challenges I was finding in promoting my Facebook Page was that if I posted something from my page, then it was always posted by me and not the page. I always wished there could be more affinity with the page instead of always from me.

How retailers are missing the point when it comes to daily deal sites

So an article popped up on Twitter the other day via JCK about online deal sites. I wanted to respond directly but also wanted to flesh it out a bit more here. I have compiled my  direct response on JCK and added my lengthy opinion here in the blog. Ironically as it would happen, an article on Mashable appeared to counter balance the JCK article.

Today I am going to tell you one simple change that Facebook recently made, one that will make a huge difference in how your jewelry store fan base can promote your company’s Facebook page.

I know, you are thinking who the heck has time for that? And the answer is no one. But what if I told you that with about 10 minutes worth of time, you could set-up a page that would create a daily newspaper and you would never have to touch it again?

Do you have Klout?

Posted by: Beth Bond in MyBlog on Apr 11, 2011

Beth Bond

Clout… it’s something that is important but it’s not the most important thing. Satisfied clientele, a happy staff, a successful business and a balanced life could arguably, and quite frankly should be, much more important. That being said, have you ever wondered, “How well am I doing with my social media strategy?” Sure, I have followers but do my followers act on what I do?” Well there is a way to at least measure how well you are doing…at least as in…sort of. The site is called Klout.

Did you know you can be on the radio, a lot and for free? Well it’s not exactly the radio - but in some ways it’s even better than radio because people can go back and listen to a previously recorded show or download the content to their IPod or favorite PDA.

Is Groupon for lemmings?

Posted by: Beth Bond in MyBlog on Feb 15, 2011

Beth Bond

I heard a non-jewelry retailer complaining about Groupon the other day. He hated it. I think he hated it because his competitors used it and had drawn business away from him. Do you know about Groupon? It’s the latest craze for shoppers who use coupons - with a technology twist. I think people assume it’s social media. I would say no. It’s like calling “Survivor” a reality show when it’s really a game show.

The first thing you should know is if you adopt an environmental/sustainable policy for your jewelry company, it shouldn’t be the first thing you talk about when you want to market what you are doing. If you have a policy in place already, then you are way ahead of the curve. This article is actually for folks who don’t.

Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Showering with a friend? Well there are a couple of more ways you can save water and it doesn’t involve stripping. Although, if you are so inclined, go ahead and do it!

So I was torn when I sat down to write this. Should I focus on the marketing/social media or the sustainability stuff? Hmmmm…so we’ll do both. Of course in the end, the goal is to make your wallet greener. Hopefully, most of these will help.

Solar is soooo sexxyyy!

So most people want to start with Solar Panels when they think of energy generation or green energy ,but really you should start with energy efficiency first. (Please see my previous blog). Solar is never going to offset your total energy bill as it currently is, so why install solar panels to create energy that is basically being thrown away?

If you haven't heard of BlogTalk Radio then check this out. I found this on the website. The intro is tediously long but once you get into the meat of the show it's very interesting. Has anyone even heard of this Beth? What is it about Beth's and green issues anyway?
